The contest focuses on innovative applications of big data, a trend that has become mainstream, challenging students to unleash their creativity and ingenuity to tap into business opportunities in the era of cloud computing. Maintaining the same high-standard process in 2012, this international contest expanded its scope this year, drawing contestants from the Philippines in addition to China, Japan, and Taiwan. Nearly 300 outstanding teams with a total of 1000 students entered the competition and were coached by Trend Micro's experts in the past 3 months. The eight finalists, rising above their peers in the preliminary round and respective national finals, presented their projects to the judges today. Team Triones from China outshines the 7 strong rivals to claim the top honor in this intense competition and will be awarded an US$8,000 cash prize and a trip to Trend Micro's cloud computing R&D center for an insider's view of its latest cloud technologies.

"Software and services driven by big data have emerged as the most important next-generation cloud applications. To harness the power of big data, not only should we foster talents to manage ever-growing data of all types, but we can explore possibilities to better utilize data of our everyday life in different areas. This event demonstrates the core value of big data – beyond a buzzword – in the age of cloud computing by showcasing innovative applications with market potential and positive social impact," said Eva Chen, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder. "Taiwan is well positioned to develop winning solutions for big data. Empowered by a complete and well-developed infrastructure of cloud computing, we can seize the opportunity to innovate and stay at the forefront of big data analytics, creating more competitive advantages for Taiwan's IT industry."

Trend Micro's 14th annual programming contest made its debut in 2000 as an initiative to foster talents in cloud computing. "We are pleased to see brilliant students from Taiwan, Japan, China, and the Philippines participate in this big event of cloud computing. These young innovators across Asia Pacific have impressed us with their creative minds as well as their passion for the technology industry. We are convinced that the Trend Micro Big Data Innovation Programming Contest, which enabled students to learn and appreciate cross-cultural differences, will spark more great ideas in the future," said Jenny Chang, Chief Culture Officer and the executive sponsor of this high-profile international contest. "With its broad spectrum of applications, big data is both interesting and worth exploring as the focus area of this challenge. The 8 finalists presented a variety of applications in daily life, ranging from apps for travelers and restaurant-goers to weather forecast backed by online security, which not only manifest the ingenious thinking and insights of the youth, but bring us fresh perspectives in developing solutions for big data."

The first-place winning team of this contest is entitled to a cash award of US$8,000 and a visit to Trend Micro's cloud computing R&D center.
